Black & White

I've been working on a collection of pattern concepts using only black and white. Not using colour has been a real challenge for me. But it has freed me up to just play with the motifs I make. I've had the paintbrushes out, and I've tried to keep the immediate (some might say imperfect) marks that having a doodle creates. Not using colour seemed to make me pare it right down too. Each time I added a layer or motif I took it away. I'm rather enjoying the simplicity of it.

I originally designed these with the idea of wrapping paper in mind. Chiefly because I dislike a lot of the sugary, birthday orientated designs that you see in shops. But I think they would also work well on bedding and ceramics.

Here they are as wrapping. I resisted colour but, I couldn't help adding some in the end!

  2. Love all of these Esther....your shapes are fab! I once did a series of mini paintings called "Black & White &" ...so I allowed myself the luxury of adding just one colour to each b & w painting.I love this concept.

  6. Fab stuff Esther, I think the use of Black and White is very difficult but you have made a great success of it. Mock ups are super!
